Lumad art, 1kg gold ring opens 23rd Kadayawan fest

THE 23rd Kadayawan sa Dabaw festival has been officially opened Monday at the Museo Dabawenyo with an indigenous peoples visual arts exhibit and a special exhibit of Compostela Valley’s gigantic, gold solidarity ring as a sign of its unity with Davao City in its celebration.

Dubbed as “Hulagway sa Kaliwatan,” the indigenous exhibit featured outstanding Dabawenyo visual arts groups and individuals. (more)

Weeklong Kadayawan kicks off Monday

TODAY marks the official opening of the weeklong celebration of the 23rd Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival with “Dayaw: Pambukas nga Tulumanon sa Kadayawan,” at 4 p.m. at People’s Park.

The official kick-off ceremony will commence with the “Huni sa Kadayawan” presentation by the Kaliwat Theater Collective and the “Pagpasalamat” message of the Kadayawan 2008 executive committee co-chair and Davao Tourism Association president Angel Puentespina.

Datu George Mandhaay of Tribung Ubo, Madrasah executive director Aleem Diamal Monib and Reverend Doctor Mariano Apelado of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines will then lead the “Pangaliya sa Kahiusan,” followed by the “Pag-abi-abi” to be led by Mary Ann Montemayor, Kadayawan 2008 executive committee vice-chair for the private sector, and the “Tolonggon” by the Kaliwat Theater Collective. CASH prizes are up for grabs as the 2008 Dutba Open Bowling Tournament rolls off at 3 p.m. Sunday at the NCCC Mall B3 Lanes.

Kadayawan bikefest fires off August 23

THE 150-kilometer massed-start Lumba Bisiklita sa Kadayawan, which hits the road on August 23 at the Davao City Hall Drive, will feature the road bike and mountain bike events.

PhilCycling Davao coordinator Salvador Paholio Jr. said there will be a five-man team competition for open elite and veterans categories and mountain bike individual junior 20-under and ladies open categories.(more)

DBA leads Kadayawan bowlfest

THE Dabawenyo Bowlers Association (DBA) and Jarano Kim grabbed the top spots in divisions A and B, respectively, in the opener of the 23rd Kadayawan Open Bowling Tournament at the Fairlanes Bowling Center Tuesday evening.

DBA hit a total of 1,107 pinfalls along with Davao City Bowlers Association (Daciba) Officers to share the lead in division A for private, government and non-government agencies. (more)

Reported harvest drop won’t affect Kadayawan

THE executive committee of the upcoming Kadayawan Festival assured Dabawenyos that the festivities will not be affected by the slump in fruit harvest as fruit farmers in the city are projecting.
“The festival is not only about the durian, but also about other fruits,” said Arturo P. Boncato, marketing director of Marco Polo Hotel who is also a member of the Kadayawan executive committee. (more)
