KADAYAWAN was one of its kind hereabouts. It was spectacular, awe inspiring in its message – “10 Tribes, 1 Vibe.” As Mayor Sarah Duterte-Carpio said, “It is colorful.” I must have seen all the possible colors on earth, the picturesque combinations, the play of colors, the intricate designs and gems only the most artistic creative minds of the weavers can achieve, impressed me. This, combined with all the quaint ethnic dances, the beatings of the drums, the gongs, the graceful performers, the symbolic interpretations of customs and traditions of everyone from the very young to the most senior members of the tribes held me spellbound.

Providentially and coincidentally, I featured in my Tuesday column last August 7 The Ethnic Tribes, our indigenous brethren. How fitting was my theme. I expounded on the significance of our ethnic tribes especially in the Mindanao area. We are brothers, co-equal, all inheritors of our native land, the Philippines. Mayor: 27th Kadayawan festival was the best so far

THE staging of the 27th Kadayawan sa Dabaw is the best so far, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio said.

The mayor issued her post-Kadayawan assessment during her weekly press briefing at her office Monday after a successful Kadayawan sa Dabaw 2012 celebration.

“This year, I just let the executive committee handle the entire festival,” the mayor said. [Read more]

THIS year’s celebration of Kadayawan is an astounding success. It is better than the best that had been staged in the past. It is truly a celebration of life and an eloquent expression of thanksgiving for the bountiful harvests. Kadayawan has many shades of meaning which is also mirrored in the interplay of colors, the beating of varied drums at the break of dawn.

The Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan was a spectacle to behold, the ensemble of street dances each distinctly choreographed to the delight of spectators who want to have a glimpse of the arts in motion. The foreigners who flew in to witness the grand celebration of Kadayawan were enthralled by the ethnic raves of vibrant cadence that go with the dance and the gait of eternally smiling young and not-so-young performers in their radiantly colorful costumes. I AM lucky to have spanned a decade of covering Mindanao’s most colorful and biggest festival in the islands. Through my work in the media as a TV anchor, columnist and photographer, I have been able to document more than a bird’s eye view of the dazzling pomp and spectacle that is Davao’s Kadayawan Festival, which earned its prestige as one of the most beautiful ethnic celebrations in the country.

Likewise, as far as I can remember, in my years of coverage for SkyCable television, the heavens have been shining down the streets of San Pedro with beautiful skies and sunny weather consistently. (Read more)

Jean “Babyjean” Ali, from Maguindanaon tribe, has brought pride and honor to her tribe as she was declared as the most beautiful, talented and culturally-inclined during the Hiyas search. (Read more)

11 kids gone missing during Kadayawan

THE City Social and Services and Development Office (CSSDO) on Thursday said six children went missing at the height of this year’s celebration of the 27th Kadayawan sa Dabaw.

But thanks to CSSDO’s help desk set up over the weekend at Rizal Park where Kadayawan’s culminating activities were held, these kids were immediately located by their parents. (Read more)

Real estate firm’s entry tops Floral Float in Davao

DAVAO CITY — Three entries stood out best among 23 others in this year’s Pamulak or the Floral Float Parade, which culminated the Kadayawan sa Dabaw 2012 celebration on Sunday.

More than 10,000 Dabawenyos and visitors trooped to the city streets to witness the parade of colorful floats artistically adorned with fresh flowers.

This year’s Pamulak was a parade of floats of competing and non-competing contingents and bands from different schools and companies in the city. Around 91 participants were listed. [Read more]

Hiyas sa Kadayawan 2012 queen wants livelihood for children

THE newly crowned Hiyas sa Kadayawan 2012 wants to take advantage of her crown to help the local government push more programs for children and for her to be a model for the youth.

“Outreach program para sa mga bata, turuan sila paano mabuhay, hindi namamalimos. Hindi ko masasabing mahirap ang buhay, lahat ng magulang kayang buhayin ang anak pero minsan may mga magulang na hindi nila kayang sustentohan ang pag-aaral ng mga bata,” she said.

She assures Dabawenyos that she will do her best during her reign as Hiyas. [Read more]

New guidelines for Pamulak float parade set

TO ENSURE the safety and orderliness of the Pamulak Float Parade, one of the highlights of this year’s Kadayawan sa Dabaw festival, organizers have imposed stricter parade guidelines for participants.

Orly Escarilla, official spokesperson for the Kadayawan sa Dabaw 2012, told reporters Thursday that on top of the usual contest guidelines, Pamulak participants will no longer be allowed to use party poppers and any form of firecrackers, litter, wear sexy and revealing clothes, use foul language and anti-government sentiments; do acrobatic stunts; throw of candies, cigarettes, towels, fans, caps, or any form of promotional materials/giveaways that can distract the flow of the parade.(Read more)

Liwanag art, music festival launch today
