Kadayawan – a celebration of life

IN MY fourteen years of residency in Davao as a happy adopted citizen, I have not failed to celebrate the Kadayawan Festival every August with much anticipation and joy.

It is a one of its kind celebration of city fiestas in the Philippines. I asked Cecile, my daughter-in-law, the meaning and connotation of the term. She got interesting answers from her Facebook friends. It means happiness, festivity, beauty, goodness. It may also mean valuable, superior, treasured. Dayaw may also mean a greeting or welcome, may be something like Mabuhay! Another possible meaning is good harvest and this happens in August.
